March 25th, 2017 marked the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome creating the European Economic Community. This anniversary is the occasion for taking stock in the state of health of Europe, looking beyond the economic sphere and focusing on rights, which should guide the entire European project. This work attempts to assess the current state of rights. Nine items were selected and then aggregated into four categories: LGBT: same-sex marriages and adoption, stepchild adoption; Bioethics: in vitro fertilization, living wills, and euthanasia; Law: average duration of trials, prison conditions and access to citizenship; Income: gender gap and basic income.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

This is the first time that data regarding rights of the 28 European Union countries was analyzed, compared and inputed into a custom database. Thanks to the database that we created, as the situation evolves we are able to automatically update the ranking of the member states. The aggregation of this data on a single stylized radial graph results in a comprehensive data visualization of the member states. Readers can appreciate the big picture while also having the possibility to further analyze the individual issues.

Technologies used for this project:

The main 60 years graph is an svg, data driven json and javascript integration. The application layer was developed in-house and manages the data ingestion from json as well as user interaction events. The European maps were realized using datamap and json. Other graphs were realized in illustrator and then animated.
