The “ALL IN THE CLAN: So many Ampatuans, Mangudadatus, Marcoses running” is a project that shows the prominent political clans running for top positions in the 2016 Philippine national and local elections. This project is an article that intensively discusses the candidates and how they are linked to prominent families that have made names for themselves in politics. This project is supported by an interactive chart to visualize the links between the members of the clans. The ABS-CBN Investigative and Research Group found out that during the 2016 national elections, families of Ampatuans, Garcias, Mangudadatus, Marcoses, Aquinos and Cojuangcos, and Ortegas each has a minimum of seven members running for different positions. A good number of candidates also carry the same surname however, it was not established that they are related to the aforementioned political families. Team members include: Chi Almario-Gonzalez, Che de los Reyes, Gerry Lirio, Gigi Grande, Crispin Abacan, Jhoanna Ballaran, Fernando Cabigao, Rachel Cantuba, Rizza Cervantes, John de Lima, Eulisa Española, Juni Gonzales, Noli Magsambol, Ana Maria Reyes.

The project, “ALL IN THE CLAN: So many Ampatuans, Mangudadatus, Marcoses running” is innovative because it highlights prominent political clans during the 2016 national elections in a very unique and creative manner. In a country were prominent families have made names in the realm of politics, the project promotes voters education on the profiles of these candidates who were running for vital positions in the national and local elections. As the project utilized an interactive chart, it will surely catch the attention of the readers.

Technologies used for this project:

Visualization tool used was Microsoft PowerBI. The tool was selected for its ability to present data in a rich and interactive manner using one dataset but also in different charts or lists. The data, as processed by the tool, is presented as a widget in a web page in ABS-CBN News site (news.abs-cbn.com) so it can be easily viewed and shared by viewers.
