DescriptionThe ‘Areas where the 2016 presidential candidates placed first in previous elections’ is an interactive visualization that highlight the areas where presidential candidates Jejomar Binay, Miriam Defensor-Santiago, Grace Poe, and Mar Roxas placed first in the 2010 and 2013 elections when they ran for a national position. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is not included in this data set because he had not run for a national post in previous elections. The information for each presidential candidate is presented in separate sheets. Aside from the name, party affiliation and the position previously held by the candidate, each sheet contains a table wherein the areas, votes garnered and the next candidate who got the most number of votes is displayed. In addition, a bubble map illustrating the magnitude of votes garnered in the previous elections, and a bar graph showing the votes garnered and registered voters in top five areas. Team members include: Chi Almario-Gonzalez, Che de los Reyes, Gerry Lirio, Gigi Grande, Crispin Abacan, Jhoanna Ballaran, Fernando Cabigao, Rachel Cantuba, Rizza Cervantes, John de Lima, Eulisa Española, Juni Gonzales, Noli Magsambol, Ana Maria Reyes.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact? It is innovative because it maximized the use of the historical data on election returns provided by the Commission on Elections. The percentage of votes garnered by each candidate was derived by computing the votes garnered by the candidate in the province in proportion to the total number of votes cast for the position in the province. The data is presented in a manner that the reader will be able to understand easily instead of looking at hard figures only.
Technologies used for this project:Visualization tool used was Microsoft PowerBI. The tool was selected for its ability to present data in a rich and interactive manner using one dataset but also in different charts or lists. The data, as processed by the tool, is presented as a widget in a web page in ABS-CBN News site (news.abs-cbn.com) so it can be easily viewed and shared by viewers.
