DescriptionBAGYO.com is an location-based SMS alert system for possibly hazardous storms. After users send a one-time text message to a government number, they will receive alerts whenever a storm approaches their area. This project aims to supplement the existing disaster warning systems in the Philippines. There are 114.6 million mobile connections today—a whopping 113% of the country's population. While many Filipinos in far-flung areas have little to no access to the Internet, it is very likely that they have mobile phones. BAGYO.com taps this abundance of cellular connections to disseminate location-aware alerts. Users do not need to have access to WiFi or GPS to register and to receive alerts. The users' location will be triangulated using the cellular network towers to which they are connected to.
Technologies used for this project:The team aims to use Twilio, which was successfully used for the >Ebolaalert program in Africa.
