Beijing Urban Vitality Report: A Research on 278 Metro Station Areas

We used big data to analyze people's behavior, commercial potential and urban functions through metro stations. Under the project "1KM from Metro Station", we integrated different types of big data to evaluate metro station areas in big cities in a comprehensive way. Beijing Urban Vitality Report is one part of the whole project to understand Chinese capital city as well as one of the oldest cities in history from a different perspective. The project aims to give an overview of different areas of a city in terms of ranking and development dynamics. There are two major challenges to evaluate vitality of a city: 1) how to define different commercial areas; 2) how to collect people's vitality via qualitative interviews and surveys in a scientific way. A new approach was applied to our project. We used metro stations to mark and define metropolitan areas and use them as "urban coordinates" since all the station names are well known and relatively easier to identify. The Beijing report used a scorecard integrating different dimensions of data including transportation, office, living, entertainment, commercial etc. to provide a quantitative assessment for urban vitality in Beijing.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

Besides the big data we collected from different perspectives, we created an index system, and visualized those big data and transform the large volume of economic numbers into infographics which clearly demonstrate vitality extent of different urban areas in Beijing. Further, by using the metro stations as the coordinates, we provide a user-friendly vitality map as well as an easy-to-understand geographic view of one city. This analysis was beneficial, not only for individuals who are interested in getting to know a city, but also companies, research groups and many other stakeholders. As we published those articles, we have got many feedbacks from internet companies who have interest to cooperate and make some further research based on the current report.

Technologies used for this project:

1) Commercial, popularity and real estate price data were collected from companies like Dianping, AMAP, Centaline Property; 2) Establish a scorecard in Excel by these data; 3) Made rankings of metro station areas; 4) Upload the data to CartoDB to generate data-based metro map; 5) PhotoShop and AI applied to edit the infographics.
