Organisation: infotimes (Egypt)

Publication Date: 04/10/2016

Size of team/newsroom:small

Due to the difficulty of obtaining data and the absence of any real implementation of transparent financial policies, we have built this interactive story trying to help the Egyptian citizens to calculate their annual tax and clarify aspects of spending it by the government. The story adopts the principle of a calculator, where users should only inter their monthly income in Egyptian pound then atomically the annual income tax will be calculated and presented with info-graphic displaying how this tax is distributed on various sectors. This simple interactive calculator aims to raise the awareness of the accountability and transparency importance. Moreover, the story explains the government budget for 2016 in a clear simple way to show the main subsidized sectors and the government's priorities for now.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

The story aims to strengthen transparency and citizen engagement through the analysis and visualization of information about the public spending in Egypt. Everyone should be able to calculate his annual income tax and figure out how it is going to be spent by the government.
