Published just before the 2016 North American International Auto Show, this striking visualization analyzes the monthly data collected by auto industry research firm Motor Intelligence to show how crossover SUVs have come to dominate the American car market. Project team: Adam Pearce, David Ingold

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

The Bali temple chart started as simple bars showing the number of different models sold each year. We were curious about the distribution of sales and how sale of a given model changed year to year, so we used both width and vertical position. To make the graphic more visually interesting, call out intriguing information about different cars, and emphasize that models of crossovers were the unit of analysis, we also interspaced the images of cars through the small multiples on the bottom.
