DescriptionCIPPEC’s Argentine Electoral Observatory’s purpose is to gather, generate and spread systematized information about the electoral systems’ rules and processes in the local and national level, for the 24 Argentinean districts (http://cippec.org/oear/reglas-electorales/). Moreover, the “Data” section (http://cippec.org/oear/datos/) contains around one hundred charts that portray electoral results from all the districts previously mentioned, from 1983 onwards. The charts not only show the electoral results but also electoral indicators, like electoral disproportion and Effective Number of Parties for senators and deputies, among others.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?Argentinean provinces have modified their electoral institutions in many occasions. Since 1953, and particularly after the establishment of a democratic system in 1983, we have generated a wide range of electoral regimes which vary considerably among districts. However, there is no common place where these experiences can be exchanged nor systematized. This is a serious problem for the public understanding of the system and a barrier to democratic participation. CIPPEC’s Argentine Electoral Observatory’s tackles this issue by providing an updated source of information, charts, data visualizations and analysis.
