Climate change puts marine life on the move
Organisation: The Connecticut Mirror (United States)
Publication Date: 04/11/2017
Size of team/newsroom:small
DescriptionThis story explored how climate change was hurting local fisherman in Connecticut because marine life was moving north out of their jurisdiction. And thanks to government red tape, they couldn't fish the new marine life that had migrated to their waters. We sought to visualize the migrating paths over the decades as well as a way to express the vulnerabilities of different sea life.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact? We sought to make the story as seamless as an experience as possible for readers no matter the screen size. The small multiples maps of the migration paths swap out with animated GIFs on mobile. Also, the maps were generated using R using raw data even though paths were available from researchers, though at a much lower quality.
