Comparison Interface for Political Position of Parties and Candidates

Organisation: The Asahi Shimbun (Japan)

Publication Date: 06/04/2014

This project is about visualizing the political position of candidates and parties for the general election in Japan to help citizens make better decision on their vote. For the data, we have launched an original survey project to clarify political positions of nearly 1500 candidates on major issues. On the website, we have built a platform where users can compare and contrast the position; when user chooses a question, the photo icon of the candidates move right to left showing their position on each issue. Infographs showing average and distribution for each party were prepared along, clarifying the characteristics of the parties through visualization. This project was the very first trial in Japan to deliver interactive comparison platform for election with wide range of coverage, and was extremely welcomed in the social media with many comments from users that the platform was useful in clarifying their mind before the voting day.

Technologies used for this project:

We collected the research result in Microsoft Excel and converted them to JSON file to read in Javascript. JQuery was used for controlling the interactive expression. Photoshop was used for the graphical design.
