Data Journalism Website or Section Connected China is a Reuters News site that tracks and visualizes the people, organizations and relationships that form China’s elite power structure. Launched in February 2013 as part of Reuters’ coverage of China’s once-in-a-decade leadership change, the site is a rich interactive platform that provides deep insight into China’s new generation of leaders with immersive, seamless integration of data, text, photos and video. The site is designed for modern web browsers and optimized for iPad 2/3.

Technologies used for this project:

The initial phase of the project involved significant research into the topic of Chinese leadership and governance. During this phase, we began to develop the underlying data structure and editorial standards to populate the database. Every relationship between people, organizations, and events was assigned a specific category. To evaluate the data, we used exploratory tools developed by Fathom built using Processing, Java, Python and Excel. The joint team developed a model for quantifying career hierarchies and social importance. The journalists then used their subject expertise to test the algorithmic classifications and rankings. The site is coded in HTML 5.
