#DoveTiCuri is a datavisualization showing mortality and survival outcomes for each hospital in Italy for a large range of pathologies. It is a searchable object/web app from which users can compare different hospitals around them to better understand the quality of the health care centers around them and nationally. The data comes from the Health Ministry but it is not commonly available for the citizens, "as they normally don't have enough understanding of what the data itself means", as they usually say. We believe that access to this kind of data should be granted to all citizens, because in Italy the health system is public funded and so it is right that citizens could monitor how money invested perform in terms of quality. And also because we believe that a tool like #DoveTiCuri is a way of empowering readers in better understanding public spending. At the moment we are developing a business idea, in order to keep the platform alive with a freemium model, but to try to monetize providing more services through Big Data analysis and in depth personalized researches on the databases. We are currently talking to investors and further details cannot be disclosed at the moment.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

Italian hospitals' and health centers' mortality and survival outcomes are not available to the general public. They are collected by the Health Ministry to be used only by stakeholders involved in health centers management and/or physicians and researchers. Since we are talking about public generated data we wanted to make it fully available to the public and the readers of Wired magazine. This is the only way available for Italian citizens to get access to this information. And it is the only way they can compare the data without being directly involved as a stakeholder. As far as we know, #DoveTiCuri is the only free web based web app that allows users to actually compare the outcomes of different centers and make their own mind on the quality of the service they are getting.

Technologies used for this project:

We based our online application on MapBox maps system. The map view has been customized graphically to respond to editorial and journalistic porpouses. The JS (Leaflet based) component has been customized as well. The appplication is automatically resized for mobile and portable devices view. We implemented a geoferenced tool, so when the user open it on mobile devices it could have an automatic glimpse of the nearest hospitals and health centres highlighted with the main indicators.
