DescriptionInspired by ProPublica's "Dollars for Docs" we scraped the Dutch national transparency register, which contains information on many tens of thousands of individual payments that medical doctors received from the pharmaceutical industry. Analysis of this data allowed us to identify the top 10 medical specialists who are sponsored the most by big pharma, as well as professional and patient associations receiving such money. These people and organizations were interviewed and investigated further to reveal the hidden influence of the pharmaceutical industry on healthcare.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact? It is the first time pharmaceutical sponsoring in The Netherlands has been uncovered on this scale and it furthers the debate about such practices.
