The end of the war with the FARC

Organisation: SEMANA Magazine / (Colombia)

Publication Date: 04/08/2017

Size of team/newsroom:small

During more than half a century of hostilities, several generations of Colombians lived under the fear of violence. Thousands of deaths and displaced people witnessed the failure of previous attempts to stop the conflict. These years Colombia had the image of a pariah country in the Latin American context. That is why the signing of the peace agreement between the State and the FARC was an episode expected by hundreds of people around the world. The end of the war with the FARC, was the space to narrate and show the world what were the great news that left us the 2016, what we left behind and what comes now that the door was opened to a future without political violence. Through stories, reports, videos, and photographs, users will not only be able to remember what happened in these 52 years, but also to understand the context of the future that awaits us now that the continent's oldest guerrilla group decided to leave the guns.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

The end of the war with the FARC is a reference for consultation. It is a journalistic product that transcended space-time for the quality of its contents that are about today, yesterday and tomorrow of the definitive renunciation of the use of weapons in the political struggle. Through various formats, readers not only approached the most important news that the country has had in years, but they were able to access it in a holistic way.

Technologies used for this project:

For the visualization of this work that includes the details of the murders committed, the language was based on HTML5. CCS3 tags were used to give shape and design to the content that was going to be shown. And in order to facilitate the interaction with users, the team started with the tools provided by JavaScripty and an online tool that helps to create maps and analyze millions of data called CartoDB.
