In this interactive data game, we show you some personal assets of the Ukrainian government officials. Playing this game, you are supposed to guess their salary according to declared properties and position in office. So, this application is about comparing cost of reported funds, real estate and cars of the officials to amount of salary they officially earn. We took data from the project which consist of about 20 000 declarations collected and digitized by activists. Frequently the declared assets of the government officials do not meet their salaries. Therefore, our application raises a question ‘How is it possible that Mr. X possesses four cars, three houses and at the same time his salary is only about $100 per month?’ At the end of the interactive data game we show you not only the result of your guess but also the general tendency of split between salaries and assets of the government officials. It is probably the most obvious illustration of corruption in Ukraine.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

We decided to create a game instead of infographics to attract more attention to the problem. This form of interaction proved to be much more engaging way to create awareness about data from declarations: public used to consider such kind of data as a very dull. Instead, more then 100 000 readers have interacted with a game since the time of publishing. From a technical point of view, probably most interesting part was to create a price model based on car's name and year of production.

Technologies used for this project:

We used web-scrapers (node.js) to collect a car prices from a couple of online markets. We used R to create a price model and to obtain data from's API. Next we programmed a game interface with a d3.js library.
