DescriptionThe Tampa Bay Times looked at six years of Florida police shootings, gathered 50,000+ documents, and compiled one of the most detailed databases of it's kind. This project was a separate story on a specific slice of data, looking at the least violent people shot and the racial breakdowns of specific circumstances they were shot in. We focused on telling a story other outlets have not told about these shootings.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact? The number of circumstances we look into for each shooting is what separates this from other police shooting projects. We tracked over 30+ circumstances and specifically look at the six most questionable in this project: unarmed, traffic stop, reaching but unarmed, running away, shot in the back, minor or no crime. We chose to make this an interactive stepper graphic to grab readers that may be tired of police shooting stories. We knew these racial breakdowns were important and deserved to be presented in a non-traditional form.
