Joyous Begisen

Job title:
I am 23 years old, currently working as the Copy Editor/Proofreader for Scanad Kenya. My job entails ensuring that sloppy copy does not leave the Agency. Whether TV advertisements, Press releases, Bill Boards, Annual reports ... it is my job to ensure that our clients look good, copy-wise.

Apart from copyediting, I am a freelance journalist with the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation, with which I worked with as a full time Employee till mid 2014. I also do consultancy in script writing and voice recording and have co-scripted, copy edited and voiced a couple of documentaries for organisations such as the Kenya Red Cross and Action Aid Kenya.

Previously, I worked with the Editorial team at the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) as a TV News reporter. At KBC, I quickly curved a niche for myself in the field of health, a journey that took me to the most interior parts of our Country, in the end producing numerous health stories that were aimed at provoking policy change and enlightening communities.

I pride myself in having attempted to tell my stories differently. Not only did I use my field sources and experts, I took a bold step to venture into a field journalists like to joke about, as the reason why they chose to be journalists; to avoid numbers! In my stories I was able to present data in a simple and clear way narrowing down the problem from the national level to your home. I also handled various other assignments a reporter is tasked with including live links for breaking stories and state functions.

Academic Profile
I hold a degree in Electronic Media and Public Relations from St. Paul’s University, a diploma in French from the Alliance Français Nairobi, an International Computer Driving License (ICDL) certificate from the Institute of Advanced Technology, Nairobi and a high school certificate from Moi Girls’ School Nairobi. I attended Westlands Primary School.

Professionally I have attended various trainings, most notably the Health for TV Journalists and Data Reporting training by Internews Kenya and Environmental Management training by the National Environment Management Authority.

I hope that you will find my entries nothing short of enlightening!
