Description

VoxUkraine is an independent analytical platform founded in 2014, after the Revolution of Dignity, by a team of highly experienced economists and lawyers based in Ukraine and abroad. Nowadays, VoxUkraine engages in a variety of research and economic activities, publishes an online magazine on economics, and develops a number of educational programs. VoxUkraine is not related to any Ukrainian political party or movement. Businessmen, government officials, or politicians have no impact on our work. VoxUkraine has a variety of projects, one of them is DataVox which is focused on collecting data and delivering data-drive researches. All collected data is free for downloading from data.voxukraine.org. Among downloaders are universities (University of Wisconsin–Madison, University of California, Charles III University of Madrid, etc.), government (National Bank of Ukraine), media, NGOs. Under DataVox umbrella, we created a website, Political Compass (compass.voxukraine.org). Political Compass is a two-dimensional political model that defines person’s political ideology. The model defines the place on the Cartesian plane on the basis of the responses to 40 questions that relate to two dimensions: economic (left – right) and social (authoritarian – libertarian). Everyone can pass a test and find out his/her ideology. The project generates lots of data based on which we create data visualization and data-driven researches. We have analyzed the responses of more than 30 000 participants of a detailed political-economy test. It turns out that men and women in Ukraine have completely different perspectives on a range of important issues. We tried to answer such questions as who is more liberal, who is leaning towards socialism, who believes in "a strong hand" and who is more tolerant of the LGBT community?

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

We are the first who try to understand political views of Ukrainians through social media. More than 50,000 users took a test. The research continues, we collect more and more data. Data is available for everyone. The model of the political compass is based on the theory that political ideology can be defined in two-dimensional space. The Economic (Left-Right) axis measures one’s opinion of how the economy should be run: “left” is defined as the desire for the economy to be run by a cooperative collective agency (which can mean the state, but can also mean a network of communes), while “right” is defined as the desire for the economy to be left to the devices of competing individuals and organizations. The other axis (Authoritarian-Libertarian) measures one’s political opinions in a social sense, regarding the amount of personal freedom that one would allow: “libertarianism” is defined as the belief that personal freedom should be maximised, while “authoritarianism” is defined as the belief that authority and tradition should be obeyed.

Technologies used for this project:

The algorithm is written in PHP; data is stored in MySQL database. We are still collecting data and now we have more than 50,000. Everyone can download the dataset from data.voxukraine.org, where we share all collected data. Languages and technologies used in the project: 1) MySQL, Python (numpy, pandas, matplotlib, plotly) for data analysis; 2) d3js for data visualization; 3) CSS, HTML, and JS for web development.
