Literacy on Lockdown

Description“Fake news” (or whatever one wants to call it) is not a new phenomenon. We have decided to look at one of the possible underlying issues in it – and this is literacy levels. If the literacy levels are poor in SA, how can children - who will later become adults - be expected to determine fact from fiction? The Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) is an international study of grade 4 (10-year-olds) literacy levels. It will be releasing its latest report in December this year. However, this information is difficult to access. It comes in PDF format and downloadable software that isn’t easy to use. We want to make excellent, accurate information accessible and easy to understand for both journalists and members of the public on the SABC Digital News and SciBraai online platforms. We are building an embeddable web-based data explorer that can be used to interrogate PIRLS data through comparisons that will also provide a call to action or solution.
