The project shows how a controversial equal rights ordinance failed by a wide margin, with voters opting to repeal the law that offered broad non-discrimination protections. The hotly contested election spurred national attention, drawing comment from the White House and the state's top officials. The maps show which precincts were in favor and which opposed the ordinance. The project uses a interactive map and a dot-density map to reveal who was is opposition and in support based on precinct.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

It was done quickly -- less than 24 hours after an election. It showed how divided the city was on an election issue that many outside of Texas viewed a civil rights issue. It was special because it was probably the most popular interactive I've created because it had national appeal.

Technologies used for this project:

Google Maps API JavaScript and QGIS was used for spatial analyses and visualization.
