Description“Car Imports” is an interactive special which enables finding out which are the brands, models, and origin of the 324,878 personal cars which Costa Rica bought between 2008 and September 2014. This special was developed upon the analysis of the database of car imports compiled by the Ministry of Finance. With the information collected by the Ministry of Finance, a database was created to study, only, the imports of personal cars. Before the analysis, the base was cleansed to verify the quality and integrity of the data and to detect inconsistencies. All those vehicles which the Directorate General of Customs had classified as personal cars, but which actually were light trucks or motorcycles, were excluded in this phase. To facilitate the analysis, all of the models were standardized, omitting features such as the type of body and the extras (car configuration). Thus, as an example, all of the car entries listed as Accent Hatchback and Accent GLS (Grand Luxury Sport) were standardized as Hyundai Accent. To include the luxury-car portion, 20 brands were selected. The preceding was done after a consultation process with people familiar with the matter and with dealers. Finally, the data were crossed to obtain the results displayed in the interactive special.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?This special is part of the 360 experience that La Nación provides its readers. The interactive takes the user on a guided tour from the car ships that arrive at the ports of Caldera and Limon to the registration in the country. During the tour, users can learn how cars are unloaded at the ports of Moin and Caldera, as well as the number of new and used cars imported to Costa Rica in the seven years analyzed. It is also possible to see which brands and models are the most coveted ones, as well and the country of origin and the data on vehicle traffic. This interactive special is complemented with a browser, where the user can check the general ranking of the brands that in larger numbers are brought into the country, and the number of motor vehicles of one given brand which roll down the streets. The interactive is offered in a Web version and in another specially designed for mobile phones. Its publication was also adapted for the print version of the daily.
Technologies used for this project:In the building of the interactive site, programming languages such as HTML5, CSS3, Skrollr JS, jQuery Table, CanvasJS, JSON, AJAX, SVG, Jquery, JS were used. Use of tools: Brackets, After Effects, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Sketch App, Invision App, paper and pencil. For data management, the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition x64 bits was used as the lead database manager system and Microsoft SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio (SSIS) as platform to generate high-performance integration solutions, among which packs for mining, transforming and loading data are included.
