No time for anger
Organisation: Neue Zürcher Zeitung (Switzerland)
Publication Date: 06/05/2014
DescriptionAfter the multiple disasters in Japan in March 2011, the Swiss daily «Neue Zürcher Zeitung» reported from Fukushima and the fisher village of Ofunato. Two years later, a team formed up by our reporter, Marcel Gyr, the photographer Christoph Bangert, and their interpreter Mitsuhiro Shoji visited the region again and met the 8-year-old Kyouya and his family, his former school director, the taxi driver Osamu Sato and a fisher from Ofunato. In 2011, Kouichi Yoshikawa, the fisher, escaped the tsunami by taking his boat out to the sea. Text, imagery, video and data visualizations reveal their stories from 2011 up until today. We divided the report deliberately between the narrative and the data analysis yet curating and combining text and data were appropriate and necessary for factbased reporting.
Technologies used for this project:For data analysis and data refinement we used Excel, Open Refine, Tableau and QGIS. For data representation we used D3.js, Leaflet.js, Processing and Adobe Illustrator. Eventually everything was put together in a set of HTML documents using the static site generator Ruby gem Middleman, CoffeeScript and Compass.
