North Korea dramatically increased the pace of its missile testing in 2016 and defied U.N. sanctions to push further ahead with the development of nuclear weapons, detonating two devices including its most powerful to date. The North’s weapons program is complicated. The journey from mining Uranium to launching a fully operational nuclear weapon has many steps. The goal of this project is to explain the country’s capabilities in each of these areas. Using data we showed how testing has dramatically intensified under the leadership of Kim Jong Un. Other diagrams explain the difference between the types of warhead North Korea is believed to have tested and what other advanced nations possess. We also looked at the arsenal of missiles and ranges.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

The project pulled together a detailed look at all elements of the North's weapons program in a very clear and understandable way. This made it a huge hit on social media as well as Reuters' news platforms and website. It was also made available for clients to download and edit or directly embed on their own websites with minimal effort.
