Description

Category 1: Data Visualisation of the Year (Small Newsroom) People's Republic of Bolzano is a visual journalism project that opens a public debate among the local community of Bolzano (a bilingual Italian city, half German, half Italian) on the local Chinese community: despite the (local) media depict a "Chinese invasion", the Chinese community in Bolzano is apparently integrated and it's so small and fragmented that neither a Chinatown exists. The project helps to break the common places spread by the media, showing to the local community who the Chinese of Bolzano are, how much are they integrated and what they think, through a series of qualitative interviews, through the data and visual storytelling. Informing people by providing good evidence in an engaging manner. The interdisciplinary team (composed by two designers, one journalist, one cultural anthropologist and one developer) has worked in a non-linear and non -traditional way, in a continuous back and forth process, rearranging all the involved elements as soon as they change. The project been presented on September 2014 and recently (February 2015) it has been translated in english, in order to met a wider audience. Despite the topic is super-local, the way it has been developed, mixing a quantitative and a qualitative approach, in order to return the complexity of the phenomena, telling it from different points of view.
