DescriptionPinpoint’s aim is to identify and create a dialogue between newsrooms and relevant and high-value social media accounts during a breaking news situation. What is the problem? A plane crash in Essendon, a gunman at a night club in Istanbul, a sniper in downtown Dallas – if you’ve seen anything or have video footage, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Where do you find this phrase? At the bottom of an article, embedded in Tweets from journalist and publications, or on Facebook. But what if people aren’t watching those spaces? How do we create participation and encourage user-generated content to be posted to their social media accounts or directly to newsrooms – particularly since so many people are turning to closed messenger apps, such as WhatsApp and Snapchat. We spoke this morning about participation and democracy, and a gap that needs to be filled are opportunities for that in a breaking news situation. Newsrooms are dependent on a loyal and already engaged audience to provide a bulk of their direct UGC. We want to find a way where we can re-engage a publication’s audience during a breaking news event, as well as reach out to high-value social accounts who may not necessarily be subscribers. Our Solution?: We are hoping to design a Twitter alert bot which would be a basis for newsrooms to incorporate into their discovery process during a breaking news situation. We call it Pinpoint. Pinpoint’s aim is to identify and create a dialogue between newsrooms and relevant and high-value social media accounts. Using defined parameters, set by the newsroom and looking at things such as query terms and geo-fencing, it will find accounts and generate a request to contact.
