“Put it before them briefly so they will read it, clearly so they will appreciate it, picturesquely so they will remember it and, above all, accurately so they will be guided by its light," said Joseph Pulitzer. Complex issues need intense simplification in the newsroom. And to demonstrate how we plan to do this in our newsroom, we have chosen the topic of the intense debate over Aadhaar or UID (Unique ID) in India -- a story that keeps growing more and more massive and complex by the day, and is of great relevance to our readers. Most people can't keep up with the narrative because it's changing at multiple levels. To help the reader understand the narrative better, she has to be first hooked and kept engaged. And we believe the way to do this is by interactivity; by pulling the reader into the debate and getting her to ask questions instead of throwing information at her. To do this, we are integrating a Facebook Messenger chatbot with our website (it will be available on both desktop and mobile), which will be like an assistant helping the reader get context on the story she is reading. Currently, it provides a pre-determined set of answers to typical questions in a reader’s mind when she reads a complex story on a topic like Aadhaar. But slowly, we hope to integrate AI capabilities into it to reduce editorial effort and to make it more interactive.
