Too Long; Didn't Watch
Organisation: NOS (Netherlands)
Publication Date: 06/02/2014
DescriptionAmong young(ish) television-viewers investing 30 minutes to watch our flagship newsbroadcast is, so they and the numbers say, too much time. As the popular meme puts it TL;DR, Too Long, Didn't Read. Or Didn't Watch as we put it. Now we change the game. It's not for us to decide how long the show runs. It's the user that is in charge. It's not -only- journalists that decide what's in it the broadcast. It's you. Your friends. Your social network. NOS is introducing the Social Newsplayer that reaches out to a modern audience and engages them to share, to create, to play, to be informed.
Technologies used for this project:We created an HTML5 videoplayer, that loads a dynamic number of videos based on the amount of time a user wants to watch. Sources are dynamic - so you can watch the best of the newsroom, the most popular or the best of your social network. The backend uses PHP to talk to the soon-to-be-public NOS API for fetching videometadata and the Twitter API for the social components. Leaders and bumpers are added automatically.
