Unfair distribution of refugees in Sweden

Unfair distribution of refugees in Sweden

Organisation: Aftonbladet (Sweden)

Publication Date: 03/30/2016

Size of team/newsroom:large

We wanted to give the reader´s of Aftonbladet a possibility (both in desktop and mobile) to investigate how many refugees with recent residence permits that each of Sweden´s 290 communes received between January and June 2015, and how many each commune should have received in proportion to its number of inhabitants. The readers could investigate the distribution of refugees both by using a sortable spreadsheet and by being directed to an application (flyktingmottagande.aftonbladet.se). One of our findings was that the commune Hammarö only received one refugee. In proportion to the number of inhabitants in the commune, it should have received 38.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

This is the first time that Swedish readers get the possibility to investigate how uneven/unfair refugees with recent residence permits were distributed between the communes.
