DescriptionThe day after the mass shooting in Roseburg, Oregon, we used data from ShootingTracker.com to visualize every mass shooting since the beginning of 2013. The project utilizes the rhetorical scroll technique to emphasize the massive scale of gun violence across the US. The date and location of each incident are displayed along with visualizations of the number of people killed and injured. The project was updated on December 3rd after the mass shooting in San Bernardino, California, which was the deadliest in the US since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in December 2012.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact? The use of the rhetorical scroll technique lends itself well to telling the story of the widespread gun violence across communities in the US. This visualization allowed us to quickly show readers the scale of the problem and put the most recent mass shooting in the context of everyday gun violence in the US. The project struck an emotional chord with our readers and they shared it widely.
