April War Victims: Half Coming from Poor Families
Organisation: HETQ.am (Armenia)
Publication Date: 04/10/2017
DescriptionIn April 2016 a four-day war started in Nagorno Karabakh between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops. The clashes have been defined as the worst since the 1994 ceasefire between the two countries. Nagorno Karabakh line of contact has been a dangerous place for the conscript soldiers aged 18-20 to serve: fires are reported every day with victims almost every week. April clashes prompted conversations about who is sent to serve on the frontline. Hetq visited the families of the soldiers killed during April and found out that they were mainly from socially vulnerable families. The research is based on survey and interviews about the families' social conditions, conducted while visiting each of 77 families or reaching them by phone.
