From Arab spring to Syrian war: mapping the intensity and evolution of conflicts
Organisation: RTSinfo (Switzerland)
Publication Date: 04/13/2016
DescriptionIn December 2010, a young man set himself on fire in Tunisia in a desperate act to protest against the local authorities’ corruption and arbitrary decisions. This specific act triggered a social and political storm. The unrest spread to other countries in the region, bringing down some governments. Syria is now undergoing a devastating war and a migration crisis has resulted. How did this wave of protest spread among countries? Which country and subject was critical at a given time? We categorized and mapped data from the past 5 years. Credit: Valentin Tombez, Frédéric Vergez, Marc Renfer
