Asylum Lottery in Switzerland
Organisation: Tages-Anzeiger (Switzerland)
Publication Date: 04/05/2017
DescriptionSwiss supreme court judges are appointed by Swiss parliament and have party affiliations. We scraped 30'000 verdicts regarding asylum seekers appeals since 2007 and analysed them using regular expressions and pandas in python, filtering out which judges regularly deny appeals and which ones grant them. We discovered that depending on the judge's political ties, plaintiffs have a threefold better (or worse) chance of receiving asylum in Switzerland.
