A school that defies the odds

DescriptionIn reviewing the latest standardized test scores at 2,625 Ontario elementary schools, I discovered a remarkable achievement by a tiny local school in a poorer neighbourhood. I dug deeper into a decade of standardized test results to reveal the full story. St. Teresa Catholic Elementary School improved its test results from below average to near the top of the province over a number of years, despite shedding enrolment and against demographic odds. Armed with the test data, I went into the school to figure out how. The keys to success: having teachers work together as a team; encouraging students to take risks and leaning on them to always do better, and building trust with parents. Which is easier to write than to achieve.
