“Decide for Your Canton” is an interactive application which compiles information on the 605 mayor candidates partaking in the 2016 municipal elections in Costa Rica. The application contains information about: 1. The profiles of the candidates: A summary of his profession, work history, age, political party, experience in politics and in community organizations. 2. Court processes: It was investigated whether the candidates had been convicted or indicted. Fairness was granted to each of the candidates facing court processes. 3. Administrative sanctions: It was investigated whether the candidates had been applied sanctions by the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic, which is the public institution responsible for supervising municipal performance. Fairness was granted to each of the candidates who had been applied sanctions. 4. Debts with Social Security: Information was collected on debts the candidates had at the personal level with the Costa Rican Social Security Institution. In turn, a profile was built for each of the cantons with the indicators of municipal performance developed by the Office of the Comptroller General of the Republic. The ten indicators chosen for the 2010-2015 period were selected according to their direct impact on the quality of life of the residents in the canton. The goal was to enable voters to see the improvements or setbacks of the local government in said areas during the period quoted. This information was particularly useful in the 46 cantons where mayors sought reelection. Lastly, the application enables to see and download the government plan and curriculum vitae of each of the candidates. The application was aimed at the citizens registered in the 81 cantons of the country and its goal was aiding electors to learn in a practical fashion about their candidates in order to cast an informed vote. Based on the data collected, 17 publications on the municipal elections were made in the print and digital issues of La Nación. Also, two micro-sites were created, one with different interactive content and visualizations of the data accompanying the news items (; and the other one ( which featured the profile of the 81 mayors who won in the February 7, 2016 election.
