Switzerland, redrawn with data
Organisation: Neue Zürcher Zeitung (Switzerland)
Publication Date: 04/07/2017
DescriptionImagine a map of Switzerland. Mountains, water, forest. Streets and towns. Province and country borders. We’ve let everything disappear – and redrew Switzerland with data. How well is the country’s shape recognizable when one shows only water? Pasture areas? Phone booths? Using a wide range of datasets, our maps allow a new view on the country. They lead the reader through nature and culture, from rock to fibre-optic network. The project allows readers to look at Switzerland from a new angle. And to discover, for example, that the 677 active hydroelectric power plants are densely distributed over the Swiss territory. That one third of this territory is covered by forest. That water is omnipresent. And that Switzerland’s shape remains recognizable even if one only maps cable car stations.
