In 2014, there were 46 flights by planes chartered under the auspices of the border protection agency Frontex. On board were people who were denied asylum in Europe and who were deported by EU member states. We have analyzed all Frontex reports pertaining to the repatriation flights. Our interactive graphic shows who had to leave Europe, where they were flown to and what the deportation cost European taxpayers. And the detailed views of every flight show the disproportion of deportees and staff on board. Full credit: Julian Stahnke, Paul Blickle, Philip Faigle, Karsten Polke-Majewski and Sascha Venohr

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

"Deporting refugees" sounds very abstract to many readers. We tried to tell this facts with a design people are used to see on airline website, booking their holiday trips. We show every flight in a detailed way, like tourists who choose their seats on a plane during check-in. This brings a completely new perspective on those flights for receptors.
