History of the SEA Games - an interactive guide

History of the SEA Games - an interactive guide

Organisation: The Straits Times (Singapore)

Publication Date: 04/09/2016

Size of team/newsroom:large

Singapore hosted the biennial South-east Asian (SEA) Games in 2015. In the lead-up to the games, The Straits Times published this data visualisation story detailing all of the medals won by Singapore's athletes through the history of the games since it began in 1959. The visualisation uses a large dataset of results to take users through Singapore's history by way of scrolling. As the user scrolls down the page, the visualisation changes to tell each significant part of the story with data. Once the user has finished scrolling, the visualisation then turns into a searchable dataset so the user can engage and find out their own data stories if they like.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

This is the first time that The Straits Times has built an interactive visualisation for SEA Games medal data since the sports event started in 1959.

Technologies used for this project:

This is a custom built website and is fully responsive using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It also uses ScrollMagic and d3.js for added interactivity.
