Where Switzerland grows – and where it shrinks

DescriptionOver the last 35 years, Switzerland's population has grown by more than 30 percent. In this interactive news app, we looked at population growth on the level of individual municipalities. While most of these grew, a few of them shrank, and this faces them with a wealth of problems: Overaging, brain drain and financial deficits, to name a few. In this piece, we let the reader explore the regional patterns of growth and decline and portray two "typical" municipalities and their individual chances and risks.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact? The project features standard data visualizations like interactive maps and line charts. As a plus, we also created a scatter plot that shows the relationship between overaging and population decline. The main feature of the piece though is the possibility to choose an individual municipality. Once chosen, it reappears in individually adapted text snippets and as annotations in the visualizations. With this setting, a link to the reader's personal experience is made.
