DescriptionIt is not always easy to own a car during winter in Montreal. After every snowstorm, approximately 6000 cars are towed, frustrating many car owners. Research conducted by Radio-Canada made it possible to determine the areas where cars are most likely to be towed. Journalists realised that these hotspots were mostly located far from free parking lots provided by the city during snowstorms and where drivers are not always able to park safely.
What makes this project innovative? What was its impact? This was the first time towing data from the city of Montreal was used to identify towing hot spots. Rather than just adding a bunch of points on map, we aggregated them into hexbins, then added a layer of free parking lots to see that most cars that are towed were far from these lots.
Technologies used for this project:QGIS to create the hexgrid and count points in polygons, Carto to map on the web.
