Description

"The war over water" is the first interactive comic developed in Peru that narrates the dispute over water and economic conflicts in one of the most important regions of Peru. We set out to narrate the nature of social conflict from the history of two farmers and from a disruptive format that allowed us to reach new audiences for a subject that is widely spoken among experts and politicians, but little among the citizens not involved with these issues. The project was developed over 8 months and is part of the investigative series #PrivilegiosFiscales of Ojo-Publico.com, which analyzes through the construction of a database the million dollar amounts that the State fails to receive by the tax benefits of private sectors with more power in Peru, as the miner. We chose the history of the Tia María mining project from Southern Copper, because it sums up the confrontation between the farmers of an important Peruvian valley and one of the most important mining companies owned by one of the richest men in Mexico and the world, German Larrea.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

"The war over water" is the first interactive comic developed in Peru. Interactive comic narratives advantages allow investigative journalism approach new and younger audiences. Teachers and principals of school have announced we will present "The war over wather" in schools and colleges. We chose a comic for its didactic and narrative power for a complex and urgent theme in Peru: the dispute over water in front of large mining projects. The comic has the ability to portray from the intimacy of the characters and their realities, stories and details that often go unnoticed in a traditional format. In "The War for Water" everything is real: testimonies, characters, audios, contexts. And we made it interactive so that the user can discover the story during their navigation and according to their rhythm.

Technologies used for this project:

At a technological level, the comic also posed a challenge to the Ojo-publico.com team because we had never developed one. We are use GreenSock Animation Platform (GSAP), a library that allowed us to animate and transitions the product. On this library, a sublibrary was later constructed to standardize the narrative structure: scenes and timeline. The development was complemented with JavaScript, CSS and Html5. The comic has 42 scenes and more than 120 drawings. Jesus Cossio drew in pencil and ink each of the characters, scenes and landscapes. These were then digitized. Cossio had to break down the images by layers: backgrounds, ambience, characters, fragments of the drawing that were to interact.
