Lena Groeger’s portfolio of work from 2016.

What makes this project innovative? What was its impact?

Lena Groeger is a triple threat -- a talented designer, a smart coder, and a fierce journalist. Her work in 2016 shows all of her talents -- from clever graphics to useful news applications. She also wrote extensively in a new, “visual evidence” series of columns that helped readers understand the ways in which design can both blind them and help them see in new ways.

Technologies used for this project:

For the graphics in this portfolio, Groeger used a few different programming languages, mostly Ruby and Javascript (including the D3 library), as well as HTML and CSS for structure and layout. The maps relied on GDAL/OGR, PostGIS and QGIS, and larger data projects relied on Ruby on Rails.
