The Gardiner - Trouble Overhead

The Gardiner - Trouble Overhead

Organisation: Global News (Canada)

Publication Date: 06/04/2014

In the spring and summer of 2012, Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway was grabbing headlines as pieces of it fell to the roads below. We started to wonder, are we getting the whole picture? Perhaps there were more incidents that hadn’t been reported, or other problems with the highway. Leslie Young of filed a Freedom of Information request to find out. As it turned out, there were even more problems with the Gardiner than we ever could have anticipated. In the over 2000 pages sent in response to the FOI request were mentions of serious structural problems which could lead to a “punch-through” of the bridge deck, hundreds of instances where loose concrete was found, and records of emergency removals of concrete hanging above a playground or parking lot that posed significant danger to the public.

Technologies used for this project:

The Gardiner Expressway interactive lets users track reported incidents along the length of the roadway. It was created using Google Fusion Tables API and JQuery to access the data, documents and images. A custom JavaScript object was used to query and build a custom map view of the affected area wising HTML and Cascading Style Sheets.
